Karuizawa at the base of Mt. Asama, an active volcano, lies both the town of Karuizawa and the Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort. Karuizawa is positioned in the eastern region of the Nagano Prefecture and is approximately a 1 to 1.5-hour train ride from Tokyo.

The best time to visit for skiing is during the winter season, typically from November to April when the slopes are open and well-covered with snow.

The snow in Karuizawa is real. However depending on the weather conditions, the resort relies on snow-making machines to create a reliable base of snow for skiing and snowboarding.

You have the option to travel on the Hokuriku Shinkansen directly from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station. Additionally, a complimentary shuttle bus operates between Karuizawa Station’s South Exit and the Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort. Please be aware that this shuttle service is available on a daily basis, but only during specific seasons.

Karuizawa has ski rental shops where you can rent ski and snowboard equipment. The resort also offers ski schools and instructors for lessons, catering to beginners and those looking to improve their skills.
